MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE 2 - 2:21 p.m.) Two policemen seized by the New People's Army in Loreto, Agusan del Sur early this week escaped Thursday after killing their guards.

Loreto police chief, Inspector Chris Artihemius Devaras, said Police Officer 2 Ronald Alan Muñez and PO1 Nemuel España have been reunited with their families.

The two were responding to a hacking incident when they were captured Sunday in Barangay Poblacion.

Devaras said Muñez and España managed to loosen their restraints.

Muñez then managed to grab the AK-47 rifle of one of their captors and opened fire, shooting two of them.

However, the two got separated as they evaded the pursuing rebels.

Muñez made it back to the police station around 8 p.m. after which soldiers and policemen were deployed to search for España, who they found around 3 a.m. hiding in the adjacent barangay of Maitum, Devaras said.

Devaras declined to have the two police officers interviewed as they were still undergoing debriefing and were scheduled to meet with the municipal and provincial crisis management councils.

Chief Superintendent Getulio Napenas, Region 13 police director, ordered pursuit operations against the rebels.

Aside from the two policemen, communist rebels also seized seven militiamen in Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur this week.

All seven have since been freed.
