CAMP GENERAL EMILIO AGUINALDO, Quezon City – An 18-year-old member of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered to Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) troops, Saturday in Agusan del Sur.
Gino Mandahinog Mansinogdan alias ‘Seme’ was 17 when he was recruited by the NPA. He voluntarily surrendered to Lt. Col. Jose Leonardo B. Gille, Commander of the 26th Infantry Battalion under the 4th Infantry Division – Philippine Army at the Headquarters, 26IB in Brgy. San Nicolas, Talacogon, Agusan del Sur. He also surrendered one AK47 (Kalashnikov) assault rifle with one magazine, and 20 rounds of ammunition to Lt. Col. Gille’s troops.
“Mansinogdan realized that there’s no hope living with his fellow NPAs in the area anymore; this is the reason why he surrendered,” Lt. Col. Gille said.
The Army’s 4ID also said what further convinced Mansinogdan to surrender are the benefits and programs that the government offers to rebel returnees like him.
Currently, he is undergoing custodial debriefing at the Headquarters, 26IB while the surrendered firearms are being assessed for proper disposition.
Mansinogdan is one of the members of the NPA’s ‘Militia ng Bayan’ operating in Sitio Semontan, Brgy. Calabuan, Esperanza, Agusan del Sur.
Recruiting minors has been a part of the NPA’s desperate moves to increase their waning force. They have been known to conduct recruitment from the youth sector as well as from communities of indigenous people. This is why the AFP is paying extra attention to these sectors in order to protect them from recruitment and exploitation by various threat groups.
The AFP for its part continues to encourage our brothers and sisters who have gone the wrong path to return to the government fold and give peace a chance and totally abandon the armed struggle. In this way, more innocent civilians will be spared from their unlawful activities which hamper our government’s ongoing efforts towards progress and development for our nation.
