Descendants of Tabunaway, Mamalu reaffirm kinship in support of Framework Agreement

About 200 leaders of Rajah Mamalu and Rajah Tabunaway re-affirmed their kinship for solidarity in support to Framework Agreement of the Bangsamoro (FAB). The two-day event for the renewal of kinship among the descendants of Mamalu and Tabunaway was held at session hall of San Isidro in Upi, Maguindanao. It started on the afternoon of April 26 and end noon of the following day.
Datu Antonio Kinoc, a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) peace panel, was the guest speaker representing Mohagher Iqbal, MILF Peace panel chairman.
Also present Timuay Melanio Ulama, member of Transition Commission and a consultant to the MILF peace panel.
The group tackled issues being faced by the Bangsamoro and Teduray communities in Central Mindanao especially on how to strengthen their support to FAB, to stop war and displacement, civilian protection, environment, human rights and encroachment into their ancestral domain.
During the opening program they revisited the past and reasserted the unity, being descendants of Tabunaway and Mamalu.
According to oral literature, there are two origins of indigenous inhabitants of Mindanao, Tabunaway and Mamalu, who were brothers. Tabunaway later converted to Islam, while Mamalu retained his original belief. This explains why Mindanao has Indigenous people (IPs) and Bangsamoro peoples- both indigenous and co-existing peacefully in this land. Historically, while the Sultanates of Sulu and Maguindanao were enjoying their political governance, they remained in close relation with their ‘brothers’ on the borders of Bukidnon, Cotabato, and Sarangani.
This oral narrative gives a glimpse of their respective identities and harmonious relationships.
The events was sponsored and organized by Kadtuntaya Foundation, Inc. (KFI), Organization of Teduray-Lambangian Ancestral Claimants (OTLAC), Mamalu-Tabunaway Kinship Council.
The ceremony included, among others, the presentation of kinship through songs, music and dances, exchanges of sawit (tokens) of kinship among the Indigenous Peoples and Bangsamoro representatives, signing of the Agreement on the General Principles of Renewal of Kinship, and messages of support
