NPA violates own ceasefire declaration

La Libertad, Negros Oriental – The CPP-NPA has again violated their ceasefire declaration when its members fired upon a team of soldiers from the Army’s 11th Infantry Battalion who were conducting peace and security patrol.
The government troops received report from the civilians on the presence of lawless armed elements in the area, and while on security patrol, they were fired upon by more or less ten (10) members of the New People’s Army (NPA) at Sitio Center Cut, Brgy Pitogo, La Libertad, Negros Oriental 5:05 p.m. today.
Sensing that they are in a disadvantageous position, the troops maneuvered while they have no recourse but to return fire. A firefight ensued for 10 minutes and the armed NPA withdrew towards northwest direction leaving behind one (1) of their members who was killed in the firefight. The identity of the killed NPA member is yet to be determined as of press time. The government troops suffered no casualties from the encounter.
The encounter also resulted to the recovery of one (1) M1 Carbine rifle with one (1) magazine loaded with live rounds of ammunition, several empty shells of ammunition for M-16 rifle found in the NPA’s position, and a military backpack that contains subversive documents and personal belonging.
The troops were also in the area in order to maintain activities supporting government and civil authorities’ peace and development programs.
Brigadier General Francisco Patrimonio, Commander of the Army’s 302nd Brigade said, “This is a clear violation of the CPP-NPA on their ceasefire declaration. It only shows that their leadership has no control over their units. The Army here in Negros remains vigilant in securing and protecting the people from these lawless armed elements.”
This is the second time that the CPP-NPA has violated their ceasefire declaration. It can be recalled that last November 16, 2013, the CPP-NPA also fired upon the government troops in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental two (2) days after they declared a ceasefire in the guise of helping the typhoon-victims. One soldier was wounded in the encounter.
“We will continue our presence in the communities in order to protect the civilians, the government, public and private infrastructure which the NPA has been planning to destroy. We call on the people to remain vigilant and report to government authorities any atrocious plans of the CPP-NPA,” Baladad added.
As part of the Army’s security operations, troops are now conducting follow-on operations in order to ensure the security and safety of the populace, while the PNP SOCO conducts investigation in the encounter area.
