AFP Launches Good Governance Watchdog

Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City—The Armed Forces of the Philippines will launch its own governance monitoring mechanism in line with its fifteen-year transformation program.
In a launching ceremony and inaugural meeting tomorrow, February 20, the AFP will formally establish its Multi-Sector Governance Council (MSGC) composed of representatives from various sectors of society.
The establishment of the MSGC highlights the AFP’s thrust in pursuing genuine reforms in the military, particularly in promoting good governance, while actively involving and engaging other government agencies and the civil sector.
Its members will include Dr Jesus Estanislao, Chairman of Institute for Solidarity in Asia; former Ambassador Lauro Baja; ASec Jennifer Oreta, Assistant Secretary for Policy of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process; Dr Alfredo Pascual, President, University of the Philippines; Ambassador Cesar Bautista, Co-Chair, National Competitiveness Council; and Fr Jose M Cruz, Dean, Ateneo School of Social Sciences.
Taking part also are Bai Rohaniza Sumndad-Usman, Founder, Teach Peace-Build Peace; Prof Solita Collas-Monsod, Professor, University of the Philippines; Hon Mel Sarmiento, Representative, 1st District Western Samar; Dr Jose Ramon Albert, President, Philippine Statistical Association; Atty Avelino Cruz, former Secretary of National Defense; and Gina Lopez, Managing Director, ABS-CBN Foundation.
The MSGC is in line with the AFP Transformation Roadmap, a 15-year strategy geared towards capability development and professionalization. To implement the AFPTR, the AFP adopted the Performance Governance System, a local adaptation of Kaplan & Norton’s Balanced Scorecard.
