Army remembers 63rd year of the Battle of Yuldong

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – The Philippine Army remembers the courage and gallantry in action shown by our Filipino soldiers as it joins the 63rd Anniversary of the Battle of Yuldong today, April 23, at the Korean War Memorial Pylon, Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City.
A wreath laying ceremony and a commemorative program was conducted with His Excellency Lee Hyuk, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Philippines as the guest of honor.
Senior military officers and personnel led by Army Vice Commander Maj Gen Romulo M Cabantac Jr, Filipino War Veterans and their dependents and other government officials were also present during the said celebration.
Filipino Soldiers during the Battle
On September of 1950, the 10th Battalion Combat Team was sent to Korea to compose the Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea or PEFTOK. They were deployed to South Korea in fulfillment of the Philippines pledge of assistance to the United Nation’s effort to stem North Korea’s Communist invasion of South Korea in 1950s.
When Allied forces neared the Yalu River, the boundary between Korea and China, Chinese troops attacked, all UN forces retreated, except the Filipinos, who, rallying under the flag and defying orders, remained and engaged the Chinese in a bitter close quarter fighting.
Considering the strength of the Chinese, UN Command ordered the Filipino forces to disengage. They were surprised to learn that the Filipinos ignored the order and they were still fighting the enemy up to the last man. They fought on and inspired the whole UN effort to stem the Communist attack. It would be an understatement to say that they prevented the UN front from collapsing.
During this year’s celebration, the Philippine Army as well as people of the Republic of Korea remembers the heroism of the PEFTOK soldiers and their invaluable service not just to the country, but to the attainment of world peace as well.
“7,000 Filipino soldiers fought side by side with other UN Forces in the battle of Yuldong against the forces of North Korea and China for the people of South Korea. We will never forget that”, said Ambassador Lee Hyuk.
