I would like to see that “Yes” will succeed in the plebiscite: Cardinal Quevedo
In an International Conference of Cotabato “On Peace is Living Together” held at the Notre Dame University, Cotabato City on June 6-7, 2014, Cardinal Orlando Quevedo said that he is certain, the people of Cotabato City will vote yes in the upcoming plebiscite for the Bangsamoro.
In the two previous plebiscites in November 1989 and 2001, Cotabato City residents voted against inclusion in the ARMM.
The Archdiocese of Cotabato under Cardinal Quevedo organized the two-day International Conference of Cotabato in partnership with the Community of San’t Egidio and Muhammadiyah (Indonesia).
The statement of the cardinal was in response to a question by Cotabato City Vice Mayor Abdullah Andang during the session on June 7, on what would happen to Cotabato City when the Bangsamoro is set up?
Andang emphasized that the city had voted twice against inclusion in the ARMM although they had been the seat of the regional autonomous government. He said they are “supporting whatever is the decision of the people of Cotabato”.
During the mass rally on May 4, 2014 staged by multi-sector organizations at the city plaza which called on Philippine Congress to pass the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) without delay, Vice Mayor Andang made the same statement.
Playing safe, and again putting his political career above the interest of Moro people, Mr. Andang is obviously avoiding displeasing Cotabato City voters that are oppose to the Bangsamoro rather than campaigning for it. However, he stressed that they want Bangsamoro in Cotabato City.
In a public forum held at Pikit Poblacion last June7, Cotabato Board Member Dulia Sultan called on the residents of the municipality to vote “Yes” during the plebiscite and pledged her support to Bangsamoro. Like Cotabato City, Pikit is also largely populated by both Moros and settlers.
Cardinal Quevedo believes that Cotabato City would benefit more if it remained the regional seat because economically and politically, it is a dead city. Without connection to the ARMM, “it is dead. It has no airport, no seaport.”
“I would like that in the next plebiscite the people of Cotabato will vote yes for Bangsamoro. Why? Because the demography has changed, from predominantly Christian, now it is predominantly Muslim and therefore it is a ‘yes’,” the Cardinal said.
“I would like to see that ‘yes’ (vote will) succeed. Because I would like to see the city recover its pristine position as a city in Central Mindanao and Mindanao itself”.
The lone airport nearest to Cotabato City is located in Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao, and the seaport is in Parang, Maguindanao.
