8ID troops encounters NPA anew, seizes another enemy camp in Samar

8th Storm Troopers ID SealCATBALOGAN CITY,(DWDD) –– Troops from the 87th Infantry (HINIRANG) Battalion, 8th Infantry Division, Philippine Army encountered NPAs anew in a remote area of Barangay Mabini, Basey Samar last August 25, 2014. A firefight ensued between the government troops and more or less five NPA rebels who subsequently withdrew after the brief encounter with the government troops. No casualties were reported as a result of the encounter on both sides.

Earlier, last August 23, 2014, same troops discovered an abandoned enemy encampment in the outskirts of the same barangay. According to Lt Colonel Antonio Dulnuan, Commanding Officer of the 87th Infantry Battalion, the camp can accommodate more or less 20 armed insurgents. The camp was discovered as a result of the unit’s security operation particularly in the hinterland of the said municipality.

Major General Jet B Velarmino AFP, Commander of the 8th Infantry Division, Philippine Army said that, “The discovery and capture of several enemy abandoned camps proves that the CPP/NPA are on the run and have lost their mass base support. Likewise, the CPP/NPA’s capabilities have significantly degraded and that the local populace are fully supporting the government’s peace initiatives and reject the use of armed struggle as an instrument to attain political goals”.
