AFP Deploys Elite Forces in Sulu

CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City –The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff, General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. has directed the deployment of one Special Forces Company from Zamboanga City to Sulu, today.

The troop movement followed the recent K9 Company deployment in the said area as the military intensifies its focused-military operations against the Abu Sayyaf Group which is believed to be holding 12 civilian hostages including five foreigners.

“The AFP is serious in its effort to flush out the bandits and contribute towards the eventual release of the victims from the hand of their captors,” said Lt. Col. Harold M. Cabunoc, Chief of the AFP’s Public Affairs Office.
The 100 men strong-elite unit of the Special Operations Command will be placed under control of the Army’s 501st Infantry Brigade that is based in Busbus, in the capital town of Jolo.
Special Forces soldiers are known to be adept in long-range reconnaissance, sniping and infiltration deep inside the enemy territory.
The AFP maintains its earlier position not to negotiate with any terrorist group.
