Army, PNP Clash with NPA Rebels in Masbate

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur~ Four rebels and one government troop were killed while another three were wounded in a vehicular ambush on Monday, 4:30 p.m. August 3, 2015 in Brgy Tuburan, Cawayan, Masbate.
The government troops, on board two trucks, were on their way back to the military and PNP camps when the rebels fired on the troops. The troops were able to fire back and engaged the rebels that lasted 15 minutes.
One pistol was recovered by the government troops in the encounter site, along with the four dead rebels, who are yet to be identified.
Earlier before the incident, the troops have confiscated one Ingram sub-machine gun rifle and one Cal. 45 pistol in Brgy. Cabungahan, Cawayan, Masbate.
Another platoon from the joint Army-PNP group also arrested two rebels and confiscated one M16 rifle, landmines, laptop and other subversive documents in Brgy Libas, Placer, Masbate.
Immediate burial and financial assistance will be given to the bereaved family of SSg Fernando Leynes while the wounded soldiers namely: Sgt Pedro Umandap, Cpl Ian Abonita, & Cpl Rolly Razalo may be evacuated to a military hospital for immediate recovery.
MGen Yerson E Depayso AFP, Commander, 9ID said "The joint Army-PNP security operations in Masbate is one of the efforts of the security forces to priority areas wherein the conduct of focused military operations will result to the clearing of rebel-affected areas." Masbate and Sorsogon are still yet to be declared Conflict-manageable provinces in the region targeted until end of 2016. Other provinces in Bicol were formally declared "Conflict-manageable and ready for further development", late 2014 until 2nd Qtr this year through partnerships and efforts with other stakeholders.
