President Duterte Visits Troops in Marawi

CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City- True to his word, the Commander-in-Chief President Rodrigo Duterte visited the troops in Marawi 2PM of 20 July -- "amidst the sound of gun and artillery fires on the background," relates Gen Eduardo Año, the AFP Chief who was with the party. (Photo from JTF Marawi)

The President set foot in Marawi as the troops launched a daring assault from the other end of Mapandi Bridge-- site of one of the fiercest gun battle in downtown Marawi heavily defended by Maute-ISIS Group.

He was given the latest Situations Update on the ongoing operations at the Tactical Command Post of Joint Task Force Marawi on the 59th day of rebellion.

He had the opportunity to shake hands with, talked to, and exchanged pleasantries with the troops.

The visit was very successful and memorable for the troops. But it was not easy. "Just a minute before the choppers landed, there were few sniper shots coming from unknown direction that targets the landing zone area," Gen Año further narrates.

"That was great morale boost for our troops engaged in the fight against terrorism. Not only was it elating for our Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines, it was an unspoken statement of a Commander-in-Chief willing to risk his life and limb just to be with his men at the thick of the conflict", according to Marine Colonel Edgard Arevalo, Chief of AFP Public Affairs Office.

Aside from General Año, the President was accompanied by Defense Sec Delfin Lorenzana, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr., Presidential Adviser for Military Affairs Usec Arthur Tabaquero, and Commanding General of the Philippine Army LTGen Glorioso Miranda.

They left the war zone 5PM of same day. #
