Japan to back Marawi reconstruction, strengthen support to Mindanao

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged support for the restoration and reconstruction of the war-torn City of Marawi during the two-day official visit of Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to Japan.

“We will provide maximum support to the restoration and reconstruction of Marawi City, and we will strengthen support for Mindanao, and toward the establishment of an autonomous government, we will respond to the progress of processes,” Abe said.


The Prime Minister also lauded the Philippine President’s exerted leadership in addressing the Marawi conflict and conveyed Japan’s full support for Duterte’s approaches towards fighting terrorism and bringing stability to Southern Philippines.

“I thank Japan for its full support for our efforts to bring just and lasting peace in Mindanao,” Duterte said. 

He added, “Apart from its involvement in the peace process, Japan is already on the ground as we proceed in the reconstructing Marawi and rebuilding the lives of those affected.”

The Philippines and Japan will also work out the construction of 200-kilometer road network connecting the Bangsamoro and other regions of Mindanao.

Japan has provided assistance to Bangsamoro Development Plan formulation and further committed to support to its implementation.

The BDP is a blueprint for the comprehensive socio-economic development of the Bangsamoro region hopefully to be implemented once the Bangsamoro government will be established after the approval of the Bangsamoro Basic Law.
