MANILA, Philippines – Nine people were wounded, seven from the Army, in an ambush by New People’s Army in Agusan del Sur on Thursday.
In a belated report on Friday, Captain Christian Uy, Army’s 4th Infantry Division spokesperson, said the government forces were on their way back to their station when they were fired upon by seven communist rebels near Balit village in San Luis town at about 1:50 a.m. on Thursday.
They were supposed to arrest a certain Nelson Lugpatan Campos, who was facing murder charges at Sitio (sub-village) Kipuyag near San Pedro village in the same town, but were not able to arrest the suspect.
The encounter lasted for about 45 minutes, leaving seven soldiers, one police and one militiaman wounded.
Pursuit of the rebels is ongoing.
