FORT BONIFACIO, Metro Manila – Three soldiers who were awardees of The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers (TOPS) 2017

were given recognition by the Philippine Army during the flag raising ceremony held here today, November 6, 2017.

Lieutenant Colonel Elmer B. Suderio, Lieutenant Colonel Ricky P. Bunayog, and Staff Sergeant Narding N. Pascual were among the 10 awardees of the 2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos. The awarding ceremony was held last September 7, 2017 at the Metrobank Plaza Auditorium in Makati City.

The 2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos was guided with the theme “Beyond Excellence.” It gave recognition to the Filipinos who rendered service above and beyond their call of duty, and whose works have transformed their communities with lasting positive impact on the people and the nation.

Four teachers, three police officers, and three soldiers comprised the top 10 outstanding Filipinos.

Suderio earned his award for leading the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion in many successful focused military operations against the Abu Sayyaf Group. Being a peace advocate, he also pioneered livelihood programs for former Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels.

Bunayog earned his award for the successful defense of several communities in Maguindao from the atrocities of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedon Fighters (BIFF.) He was instrumental in ending several "ridos" in the said province. He also led Civil-Military efforts in the province, such as the construction of two Muslim schools.

Lastly, Pascual is a seasoned soldier who fought in battles against NPA rebels in Agusan del Sur. He and his men successfully defended several indigenous communities from threat groups. Pascual was also instrumental in providing electricity to the residents of a barangay in Agusan del Sur; and through his coordination with the residents, tribal leaders, and the municipal government, a classroom in a sitio was constructed to aid in providing education to the youth.

“It is my hope that every soldier will aspire to give the same quality service to our fellow citizens and our country wherever you may be assigned. May your example enkindle the desire of every soldier to reach out and give a helping hand to the people we serve,” said Lieutenant General Rolando Joselito D. Bautista, Army Chief, during the recognition ceremony.#
