Army develops chemical, biological disaster response capability

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – The development of the Philippine Army’s chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear disaster preparedness has gone a level up after receiving new equipment from a U.S. defense agency and started its own training here last month.
The Army’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) Platoon, under the Army Support Command (ASCOM) based here, received 500 pieces of different CBRN-related disaster response equipment from the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) on Sept. 17.
The CBRN items donated by the U.S. DTRA are composed of reconnaissance, surveillance, and decontamination equipment with accessories.
In relation to this, the Philippine Army has just finished its own CBRN training last month at ASCOM to enhance the knowledge and skills of its CBRN personnel.
The Army troops were trained to detect, identify, decontaminate and dispose biological agents, to include chemical, radiological and nuclear substances, and high-yield explosives.
Under the 1st horizon of the approved Philippine Army Capability Upgrade Program (2013 – 2017), the Army is set to procure two lots of CBRN equipment to fill-up its limited CBRN equipment inventory.
In the Army’s Transformation Roadmap (up to 2028), the Army envisions itself to be a well-equipped and respected Army in Southeast Asia, and a potent force that is ready and capable to address external threats by 2016.
