Imee calls for Christmas truce between AFP, NPA

MANILA – Senator Imee Marcos on Friday called on the Communist Party of the Philippines
- New People's Army - National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to implement a truce for a peaceful celebration of the Christmas season.

Marcos, however, condemned the killing of two soldiers who were part of response teams assisting earthquake victims in Abra province on Thursday morning.

"The enemies of (the) government are showing no conscience, no mercy, no heart, no humanity in carrying out these dastardly acts in calamitous circumstances," she said in a statement.

According to authorities, the ambush happened in Barangay Gacab in Malicbong town, killing Private 1st Class (Pfc) Ariz Bautista, 26, and Pfc Jimmy Viernes, 25, members of the 24th Infantry Battalion (24IB) of the Philippine Army.

Viernes reportedly left orphaned one child who is just two months old.

Pfc Reymond Galo and Pfc Randy Cinco survived the attack by about six to seven suspected NPA rebels.

The soldiers were on their way to Licuan-Baay town for a humanitarian assistance and disaster response mission to help residents affected by Tuesday night’s magnitude 6.4 earthquake.

"It is very unfortunate that while we are helping the residents devastated by the earthquake, two of our troops were killed," Lt. Col Ricardo Garcia III, commanding officer of the 24IB, said in a statement. (PNA)
