Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 27) — Malacañang
on Wednesday released a partial list of members of the Bangsamoro
Transition Autority (BTA), which will serve as the interim government of
the newly-established autonomous region in the South.
President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the appointment of 76 members of the BTA, which should hold 80 seats overall.
A total of 77 appointment papers were released, including two appointment papers for Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim -- one as as interim chief minister and another as member of the BTA.
The four other nominees are still being screened.
Here is the initial list of BTA members:
Meanwhile, Murad has called for the interim government's first meeting on Wednesday, where members are expected to finally get to know each other.
Convening as a parliament for the first time, the BTA also has to finalize its Rules of Procedure. The draft will be passed around among members before the inaugural session.
Former Lanao del Sur Representative Pangalian Balindong said that while the Bangsamoro parliament is a "first of its kind," its rules may still be similar to those of Congress.
"Mas mabigat ito (this is deeper issue) because this is something novel, something new," Balindong said.
The transition body will have legislative and executive powers during the transition period until the first local election takes place in 2022.
The Bangsamoro law, which was ratified January 25, is envisioned to end the decades-long conflict in Mindanao.
This is a developing story.
