Gapay lauds Army unit for successful ops vs. Reds in NegOr

MANILA – Philippine Army (PA) commander, Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay, on Wednesday, lauded the 62nd Infantry Battalion for its recent successful combat operation against New People's Army rebels (NPA) in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.

“Another success was delivered by our troops’ remarkable teamwork. Let the 62nd Infantry Battalion’s accomplishment serve as the driving force of the Philippine Army in pursuing peace and order in our country,” Gapay said in a statement.

The encounter in Sitio Agpapatao, Barangay Binobohan resulted in the death of two rebels and recovery of two .45-caliber pistols, a .38-caliber pistol, four loaded .45-caliber magazines, a number of .38-caliber bullets and several subversive documents.

Col. Ramon Zagala, the Army spokesperson, said the slain rebels were identified as members of the NPA's Special Partisan Unit who are responsible for the killings of innocent civilians in Guihulngan City.

Reports said troops were patrolling the area in response to reports of concerned citizens regarding the presence of communist terrorists when they encountered around 10 of them around 6:10 p.m. on February 28.

A 12-minute firefight ensued when the NPAs fired on the patrolling soldiers, forcing the latter to retaliate, killing two rebels in the process and forcing the remainder to retreat. (PNA)
