President Duterte hopes Ramadan gives peace amidst the adversity and challenges

President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday joined Muslim Filipinos as they embark on a spiritual journey of reflection and contemplation during Ramadan. He hoped that the holy month will give peace amidst the adversity and challenges being faced each day.

“As you read the revelations of Allah with renewed dedication and vigor, may the sacred text inspire you to further lead a life of purity and clarity,” the President said in his message.

He also hoped that the devotion and sacrifices of the Muslims in the country will reaffirm their commitment to foster unity and solidarity regardless of faith or creed.

“As you embody the religious insights and epiphanies you have gleaned from this undertaking, may you be moved to advance our collective resolve to eschew misguided ideologies so that we may achieve a truly progressive and inclusive society,” Duterte said.

The ninth month in the Islamic Hijra calender, Ramadan is considered by Muslims as blessed month. During Ramadan, it is obligatory for every adult Muslim to fast from dawn till sunset where they abstain from eating, drinking and engaging in sex, for 29 or 30 days.

Ramadan ends once the crescent of the Shawal, the month after Ramadan is sighted.

Sheikh Abuhuraira Udasan, the Mufti of the Bangsamoro and Executive Director of the Regional Darul Ifta of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, said Ramadan will start on Friday April 24, 2020.

Their decision to declare that the start of Ramadan this Friday is based on the result of moonsighting on Wednesday wherein the Ramadan-crescent was not sighted.

In order to contain the spread of corona virus disease 2019, the Darul Ifta issued fatwas suspending the conduct of congregational prayers in mosques including Taraweeh, a special nightly congregational prayer on Ramadhan.

For their safety, instead of praying in mosques, Muslims may perform their prayers at home.
