CAMP GENERAL EMILIO AGUINALDO, Quezon City – In his speech at the closing ceremony of the 2nd National Youth Leaders’ Congress (NYLC) held here in Camp Aguinaldo, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff, General Emmanuel T. Bautista challenged youth leaders across the country to make a difference now in the society by being the ‘heroes of today’, not in the future.
General Bautista delivered this message in front of more than 150 youth leaders, mostly presidents and vice presidents of youth organizations from across the country who were invited to join in this year’s NYLC. They are from different places in NCR, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao who also came from different faiths, cultures, and ethnic groups.

“I believe in the idealism and energy of the youth who are the moving force of our society. You can make a difference simply by expressing your desire for peace,” General Bautista addressed the NYLC participants.
Today’s ceremony was graced by National Youth Commission (NYC) Commissioner at large and renowned actor Dingdong Dantes along with AFP Deputy Chief of Staff for Civil-Military Operations, Major General Lysander Suerte. It is the culmination of the three-day conference which started Wednesday at the First Pacific Leadership Academy in Antipolo City.
During the conference, the AFP and NYC invited speakers and youth advocates to develop the participants’ leadership skills and encourage them to actively engage in public service in their respective communities. Among the speakers were NYC Chairperson, Gregorio Ramon Tingson; Head of Marketing for HERO Foundation, Michelle Chan; actor and youth advocate Richard Gomez; Congressman Mel Sarmiento of Samar; Miss Philippines Supranational, Yvette Santiago; Filipino folk singer and songwriter, Joey Ayala; and Beauty Queen turned Councilor, Daisy Reyes of Pateros, Manila.
Anchored with the theme “Unity in Diversity: Creating Strong Alliances Towards Nation-Building”, the NYLC is part of the AFP’s recognition of the youth’s important role in nation-building. It is also the opportunity that the AFP employs to harness youth’s activism, idealism, and enthusiasm for nation building that would help prevent their recruitment and exploitation.
Its goal is to enhance the knowledge of the youth regarding their role in nation-building and develop their patriotic leadership through team-building and sports activities.
It is also aimed at sending the message to our misled brothers and sisters who continue to participate in the armed struggle that the Filipino youth is one with the AFP in pursuit of winning the peace.
In closing, General Bautista encouraged the NYLC participants to be responsible citizens of this country and “tell the whole world that the youth of the Philippines desire peace.”
